 “I hope you can achieve the goal that ‘Fish swim in vast sea as freely as birds fly in boundless sky’, thus living a wonderful life in the campus; with the aspiration of ‘If once together with the wind the peng could rise; He would fly ninety thousand li up to the skies’, you are expected to shoulder your responsibilities to bring prosperity and happiness to our country, our nation and our people.”

It is the golden season of the year. On the afternoon of September 2, GCU held the 2019 Opening Ceremony for Freshmen, gathering around 5,700 undergraduates and 10 postgraduates who usher in a new stage in their life. Representatives attended the ceremony, including the member of the Standing Committee of CPC SCUT Committee and vice president of South China University of Technology; Qiu Xueqing, president of GCU, related leadership of GCU including Zeng Zhixin, Li Huagang, Zhang Peixiang, Zeng Lingtao, Zhou Shiyao, Lin Ying and persons in charge of schools, departments and divisions, counselors of freshmen and representatives of teachers. The ceremony began with China’s national anthem. President Qiu Xueqing extended a warm welcome to freshmen from all over the country while introducing principles and history of school running as well as its achievements. He stated that GCU kept up with the times to promote its major construction in line with the economic development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in recent years. It has formed a distinctive system of talent cultivation with teachers of professional ethics and competence. Moreover, he encouraged freshmen to harness their strengths while developing innovation and practical skills. Meanwhile, the university will pay attention to the construction of campus culture, which helps to advance students’ well-rounded development. Qiu further pointed out that this year marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. GCU will seize the opportunities to run the university with concerted efforts guided by the education policy of “fostering virtue through education and enhancing students’ well-rounded development” proposed by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. At the ceremony, he also pointed out that this year, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic; the school will firmly grasp the current development opportunities and adhere to the general strategy of Cultivating people through virtue, implementing quality-oriented education put forward by General Secretary Xi Jinping, keep united and work hard together.

Qiu hoped that freshmen could seize the day and pursue their dreams with a patriotic spirit and a commitment to serving the country in the following four years.

In his speech, Qiu put forward three hopes for freshmen. Firstly, endeavoring to be a diligent learner who studies extensively and reflect carefully. He hoped that freshmen could cherish their time in the following four years, concentrate on their study no matter in class, lab or different competitions based on their interests and majors with thirst for knowledge and a sense of urgency to learn. In this way, they can master scientific methods and form a good habit of learning. Secondly, endeavoring to be a striver with aim high. He hoped that freshmen could be doers instead of thinkers through surmounting difficulties. Thirdly, endeavoring to be a youth shouldering one’s social responsibilities while being dedicated to giving of themselves. He hoped that freshmen could integrate their pursuits with nation’s development through concrete actions. Remaining dedicated to the country and serving the country, they could strive to grow into a new generation of capable young people who will fully develop socialism and carry forward the socialist cause through keeping pace with the times and sharing the same future with Chinese people.
