GCUT signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the University of Liverpool

The delegation of the University of Liverpool visited Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) on March 31, including Professor Joseph Sweeney, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of Faculty of Science & Engineering of the University of Liverpool and Professor Philip Drake, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences of the University of Liverpool. It symbolizes that the two universities have officially established cooperation. The University of Liverpool is also the first university that has established cooperation with GCUT which ranks among the Top 20 in the United Kingdom. Liu Jianbo, GCUT’s Vice President, An Ran, head of GCUT’s Office of International Exchange & Cooperation and dean of GCUT’s International Business School, Yang Xiangyu, dean of GCUT’s School of Electrical Engineering and related personnel in charge of GCUT’s School of Electronics and Information Engineering & Telecommunication Engineering attended the signing ceremony.



Liu Jianbo extended a warm welcome to the delegation of the University of Liverpool on behalf of GCUT. He pointed out that the University of Liverpool is one of the high-level universities in United Kingdom, well-known for its outstanding teaching quality and strong research strength, which also pioneered in establishing cooperation with China. The delegation of the University of Liverpool visited GCUT and signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with it, which will become a well begun. He hoped that more students from GCUT would pursue further education in the University of Liverpool while expecting more cooperation the University of Liverpool in all aspects in the future.

Joseph Sweeney appreciated GCUT’s warm reception. Then, he gave a brief introduction of strengths of school running and direction of teaching of the University of Liverpool as well as its vision as an internationalized university. He put forward that drawing on its teaching and research strengths such as engineering, artificial intelligence and computer science, the University of Liverpool had integrated multidisciplinary education and empowered teaching with modern technologies to enable its students to equip with abilities to fit in various posts. Moreover, the University of Liverpool devotes to cultivating internationalized talents. Both Liverpool and the University of Liverpool have long maintained exchanges and cooperation with China. He pointed out that “The University of Liverpool shapes its future with the past. We welcome Chinese students to pursue further education in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, we hope our students could learn more about Chinese culture to promote people-to-people exchanges of students from the two counties.”


International academic lecture delivered by the University of Liverpool


After the meeting, Joseph Sweeney and Philip Drake held international academic lectures for engineering and humanities students respectively. Themed on “science empowers the innovation of medicine”, Joseph Sweeney illustrated the cohesion of “basic knowledge - scientific research - commercialization of application - industrial upgrading- global coordination” with the COVID-19 vaccine development as an example, encouraging students to foster global perspectives, thus advancing technological innovation with what they have learned. Philip Drake expounded newly-added popular postgraduate majors of the University of Liverpool such as “Green Finance and Sustainability Accounting” and “Artificial Intelligence and Digital Business” based on latest academic frontiers, namely, “global sustainable development and digital transformation”, showing present students its strategic industry-university-research network dependent on global well-known enterprises such as Google and Microsoft.

Personnel in charge of enrollment work of the University of Liverpool explained how to apply for its postgraduate programme. The University of Liverpool introduces diversified policies for its students, such as internship, various kinds of scholarships, accommodations for students, free accommodation for students taking language courses. What should be mentioned is that it provides great support for those who intend to pursue further education in the United Kingdom especially in scholarships: students from universities that it has established cooperation with, students with outstanding academic performances and students participating in its short-term exchange programme or term-based exchanges can win scholarships, which can be accumulated to reduce nearly half of a student’s tuition fee at top.


The delegation visited a laboratory and a jewelry exhibition hall


The delegation of the University of Liverpool visited GCUT’s Green and Intelligent Transportation Modern Technology Laboratory and School of Jewelry. They appreciated GCUT’s achievements in its cooperation between colleges and businesses and students’ racing practice when visiting intelligent driving and rail transit teaching area through sandbox approaches. Moreover, they thought highly of GCUT’s integrated education between Eastern aesthetics and digital and smart manufacturing as for Cloisonné and 3D printing smart jewelry series presented by GCUT’s School of Jewelry.

The University of Liverpool was originally founded in 1881, which is a well-known public comprehensive research university, marked as the original redbrick and a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group. It maintains to be in front in the world university rankings as well as rankings of UK’s universities, which ranks the 165th in the QS World University Rankings 2025 and the 20th in the ranking of UK’s universities conducted by Times Higher Education. Several students from GCUT have received offers from the University of Liverpool for their postgraduate degree in recent years. The two universities will promote more GCUT’s graduates and young teachers to pursue further education in the the United Kingdom after establishing cooperation.
