Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) held the 2025 Opening Ceremony for Freshmen on the afternoon of September 1. Over 6,000 freshmen will embark on a new journey at GCUT in 2025.

Vice President of South China University of Technology, Li Zheng and GCUT’s leadership attended the ceremony, including Secretary of CPC Guangzhou City University of Technology Committee Du Xiaoming, President Su Cheng, Vice President Zhou Shiyao, Deputy Secretary of CPC Guangzhou City University of Technology Committee and Vice President Liu Jianbo and Secretary of the Commission for Disciplinary Inspection of CPC Guangzhou City University of Technology Committee and Vice President Shang Qichao. Chiefs of GCUT’s schools, administrative offices, freshmen counselors, representatives of class supervisors as well as freshmen were also present. Vice President Zhou Shiyao presided over the ceremony.

President Su Cheng delivered the first class to freshmen themed on Shouldering Responsibilities of the Times, Being Youth of China in the New Era.

“Today symbolizes a brand new start for you. Since you enter the university, you are a part of GCUT”. President Su Cheng extended warm welcome to freshmen on behalf of GCUT, Chairman Huang Zhenyu, Secretary Du Xiaoming and GCUT’s staff while appreciating the efforts of students’ parents and teachers at the opening ceremony.

President Su Cheng pointed out that GCUT has always shouldered its responsibility of serving the regional development while staying consistent with the requirements of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as well as local economic and social development. Moreover, it plays an active part in facing the talent challenge brought by national strategies and industrial transformation. Furthermore, it endeavors to build a high quality and structured faculty and staff with its building as the foundation of the school running. It also keeps improving the campus and service systems as it devotes to creating an environment that is livable and suitable for learning.

Passing down through generations, we shoulder our responsibilities. “We are standing at the cross road between history and reality. As a new generation of GCUTers, you need to build on past achievements and launch a new journey. As the gathering marking 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War will be held, we must realize that the real commemoration is the patriotism that survival of a nation is the responsibility of every individual; the real treasure is valuing peaceful environment and opportunities to pursue higher education; the real devotion is to integrate one’s ideals into the tide of our times while writing your own paper of youth with your down-to-earth spirits. I hope that you can create a better life through efforts drawing on the spirits of Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression!”

Furthermore, President Su Cheng put forward two expectations for freshmen to enrich their college life and make it meaningful:

Firstly, striving to be a youth of responsibilities while remaining your original aspirations and missions and love for the nation and family. General Secretary Xi Jinping Jinping pointed out that Chinese youth should follow the Party and Chinese people’s call to stay true to your ideals and convictions and stand firm in your love for the nation and family. Through shouldering your missions, you can write your new chapter in the new era. What General Secretary Xi Jinping has said inspires you to pursue lofty ideals and integrate personal pursuit into national development.

Secondly, endeavoring to be a promising youth with knowledge and wisdom through building ability. As sci-tech revolution and industrial transformation change rapidly nowadays, new technologies such as artificial intelligence reshape our society. GCUT is fully promoting the cultivation of artificial intelligence talents while integrating the cultivation of artificial intelligence literacy and competence in the whole process of talent cultivation. I hope that you can catch up with the times and GCUT’s development to value your time at GCUT and focus on your study. You should lay solid foundation for what you learn and enlarge your knowledge reserve while fostering interdisciplinary thinking. Moreover, you need to play an active part in participating in academic contests, scientific and research projects, internship, and training, through which you can turn what you have learned into the abilities to solve actual problems. In this way, you can realize the expectation of “putting what you have learned into practice concerning realities of our motherland”.

The future holds tremendous promise. I hope that you can make full use of your days at GCUT, having a down-to-earth attitude towards your study to lay a solid foundation and pursuing your ideals. To shouldering heavy tasks of the new journey, achieve the goal of accomplishing yourselves and create a better future, I expect that you could stay true to your ideals and convictions and refine your professional skills with the belief that seizes the day and lives it to the fullest!

At GCUT, you will wander in the ocean of knowledge with your instructors and make friends with similar interests, thus spending unforgettable days here. Freshmen of the Class of 2025, may you embrace your college life towards your what you desire with enthusiasm, perseverance and firmness!
