The Finals of the Application of Internet of Things, Design of Information Visualization and Creation of Computer Music included in the 18th China Collegiate Computing Contest were held in Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, which is located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The work, Visualized Design of Ru Porcelain Craft supervised by Zhang Yubo and Liang Wenjun (teachers from Guangzhou City University of Technology [GCUT]), outshone in the Design of Information Visualization Final and won the national first prize, which achieves the best performance in the China Collegiate Computing Contest. Moreover, the work, Ancient Melodies supervised by Fan Bowen, won the national third prize.
The 18th China Collegiate Computing Contest Finals have received 3,830 works from China’s universities, including well-known ones such as Zhejiang University, Tongji University and Xiamen University. To make preparations for the contest, GCUT’s School of Computer Engineering and Big Data, which functions as GCUT’s host of the contest, has played an active part in mobilizing and organizing selections within the university while equipping selectors with outstanding supervisors. There were 29 teams from GCUT participating in the Guangdong Collegiate Computing Contest held in the first half of this year, 9 of which won provincial prizes. The team of supervisors provided detailed guidance for their students on topic selection of works, feasibility of technologies, exploration of profound culture and preparation of oral defense when they prepared for the contest. The team members pulled together to present consistent performances drawing on their solid professional competence and creative design ideas. Consequently, they outshone in the contest and achieved prizes.
Visualized Design of Ru Porcelain Craft designed by Zhang Jiayu, Gaoyi and Li Junming adopted modern technologies of information visualization to integrate dimensional data such as the history, craft, art and culture of Ru Porcelain. Their work shows the beauty of Ru Porcelain based on interaction designs, clear data chart and presentation of Oriental aesthetics, which covers ten production technologies such as mining and stone selection. It analyzed how the glaze body turned into its unique porcelain opening pieces including cicada-wing-shaped pattern under thermal expansion and contraction, thus presenting glaze colors with azure as the majority, different textures of crack pattern, and various shapes of porcelain including bottles and cup holders. The work, Ancient Melodies, designed by Zhou Lu, Huang Yingyuan, Xuan Siyun, Zhi Zijun and Yu Junfeng, adopts interactive visualized technologies based on traditional Chinese musical to carry forward fine traditional Chinese culture. Therefore, they designed a digital platform on musical culture that can enhance its efficiency. In this way, they hope to achieve social benefits such as cultural inheritance and protection, knowledge dissemination and education as well as art appreciation.
It it known that China Collegiate Computing Contest is co-hosted by the Advisory Committee on Teaching Computer-related Majors in Higher Education and the Advisory Committee on Teaching Software Engineering in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, which is listed on the national academic contests for college students that enjoys great influence. The outstanding performances of GCUTers reveal that GCUT’s achievements in cultivating students’ innovative spirits, practical skills and comprehensive competence.
