Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) first released its 25 digital teaching materials officially on May 9, which symbolizes that GCUT has ushered in a new stage of digital transformation and innovation of digital educational resources, helping to provide “intelligent engines” for the cultivation of application-oriented talents.   

Seizing opportunities of the times to stay consistent with national strategies

As China is accelerating the digital transformation of education, it emphasizes that information and technology should be adopted to reshape teaching scenarios. Being one of an application-oriented universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, GCUT initiated the releasing of digital educational materials based on regional industrial requirements, which is dependent on its school-running orientation featuring “with engineering as the priority, engineering, management science, economics, literature, fine arts and natural science embracing coordinated development”. It deeply integrates technologies including artificial intelligence and virtual simulation with traditional teaching contents in cooperation with the Open University of China Press and South China University of Technology Press drawing on its resources such as 7 provincial industry-education integration institutes and 7 provincial demonstration centers for experimental teaching. In this way, it has built a digital curriculum system covering various disciplines with mechanical engineering, art & design, and social science included.

The highlight of digital educational materials: focusing on both practicality and foresight

These 25 digital educational teaching materials concentrate on interdisciplinary studies of “emerging engineering education” and “new liberal arts”, covering academic frontiers such as Structures and Principles of New Energy Vehicle, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Marketing for Hospitality and Tourism, Appreciation and Evaluation of Jadeite, Integration of Translation and Machine: The Basics of Translation and the Application of Artificial Intelligence. These materials adopts modular designs including micro-lesson videos, 2D animation and case studies with the latest industry databases updated.

Improving quality of educational resources to promote reforms of educational approaches

The releasing of digital educational materials symbolizes that GCUT has made three breakthroughs in its building of educational resources: firstly, it enhances its capacities in resource integration dependent on 1,350,000 eBooks and 33 specialized databases in its library, thus achieving interconnection of interdisciplinary resources and supporting personalized learning path planning; secondly, it can deepen the integration between industry and education since the development team of educational materials consists of GCUT’s teachers and engineers from enterprises, totaling around 50; thirdly, it reconstructs its teaching evaluation system as teachers can know about students’ learning effects based on the data collection and analysis of the cloud platform for digital educational materials, which helps to improve their teaching strategies. In this way, teachers can further consolidate gains in GCUT’s 6 provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites and 26 provincial first-class undergraduate courses.

GCUT adopts technological innovation to advance educational reform turning from traditional paper-based educational materials to dynamic and interactive digital resources, providing an efficient learning tool for over 2,0000 students.
