On the afternoon of September 13, the 2021 opening ceremony for freshmen of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) was held onthe playing field.Related leadership attended the ceremony, including Du Xiaoming, Secretary of CPC Guangzhou City University of Technology Committee; Li Zheng, vice president of South China University of Technology (SCUT); Huang Zhenyu, president of Guangzhou Zhujiang Yunfeng Investment Co., Ltd.; Wu Bo, president of GCUT; Liang Guojie, vice president of Guangzhou Zhujiang Yunfeng Investment Co., Ltd.; Wang Ruisong, assistant to the president of Guangzhou Zhujiang Yunfeng Investment Co., Ltd.; and Zhou Shiyao, Lin Ying, Liu Jianbo, Shang Qichao, vice presidents of GCUT attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Zhou Shiyao.

Wu Bo delivered a speech themed onForging Ahead in the New Era as a first class for freshmen. As a application-oriented undergraduate university, GCUT stay consistent with reform and innovation of education and teaching drawing on the centenary features and red culture of SCUT guided by “complementary development dependent on SCUT, aiming on high level construction and quality school running”. Consequently, it has achieved fruitful results in specialty construction, talent cultivation and applied research.

Based on the actual situation of the university,Wuillustrated achievements in school running withtypical examples. Firstly, he pointed out that GCUT focuses on the requirements of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area whileintegrating with regional economic and social development. For example, regarding the urgent requirement for upgrading the smart manufacturing industry and its related talents, School of Civil Engineering of GCUT was the first to offer the major of intelligent manufacturing in Guangdong province. Secondly, GCUT places great emphasis on the combination of theory and practice while running the school, therefore,the quality of its talents is widely recognized by society. It is estimated that 80% of its students participated in innovation and entrepreneurship practice, enhancing their practical ability.Thirdly, GCUT pays attention to high-level applied research, and tries its best to make its papers rooted in reality. With applied research as its priority, GCUT keeps deepening the cooperation with enterprises, industries and local governments, thus achieving a series of quality achievements in scientific research. In this way, it makes contributionsto local economic and social development.

At the opening ceremony, Wu also gave a lecture on thefirst ideological and political lesson concerning the incoming of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China to guide freshmen to learn and understand the speech delivered on July 1, 2021 by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Moreover, they can put what they have learned into practice and devoting themselves to the new journey ahead in the new era. Furthermore, he pointed out that freshmen were born in great times with ample opportunities while they should also shoulder their responsibilities in line with the new times, thus making contributions to making the country prosperous and strong as well as rejuvenating the Chinese nation.    

Finally, Wu proposed two hopes for freshmen. Firstly, they should be confident in their own path with integrity as the priority. Faced with complicated international landscape, freshmen must remain confidence in the Chinese socialist path, aspire to become more proud, confident, and assured in their identity, and cultivate and observe core socialist values. Secondly, they should strengthen their awareness of innovation while keeping pursuing excellence. He hoped freshmen can seize opportunities with requirements of the nation as their direction, integrating their personal dreams and pursuits with the great cause of China and Chinese nation. They should strive to forge ahead with in the new era, writing a new chapter in their youth without failing the times through turning their ambitions into daily actions.

Yue Suwei, an outstanding teacher of Guangdong province, delivered a speech as a representative of GCUT’s teachers. He encouraged freshmen to look up at the stars while keepingtheir feet on the ground;endeavoring to be a quick learner and better thinker; striving to be self-confident, self-reliant and virtuous;furthermore, they can grow into youth with a sense of togetherness independence and self-discipline in the new era. He hoped the newly-coming GCUTers could devote themselves to the development of China and the benefits of the people.

Chen Chuanxi, a junior student from theSchool of Management, shared three key words with freshmen, namely, responsibility, goals and action. He inspired freshmen to advance bravely, forge ahead and overcome difficulties, thus writing a new chapter in their prime. 

Zhao Jieting, a representative of freshmen, shared her plan in the following four years. She believed that the new semester begins with a new hope. She intended to encounter new challenges with confidence and courage while striving to score new achievements in the future.

As a Chinese saying goes, "The journey ahead may be long and arduous, but with sustained actions, we will eventually reach our destination and embrace a brighter future”. Zhou Shiyao, vice president of GCUT, sharing her expectations for freshmen: “This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, we should forge ahead on a new journey to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. I hope youcan pursue lofty ideals and shoulder responsibilities of the times, thus devotingyourselves to the great cause of the Party and the people.Through enriching, persevering, improving and completingyourselves, you can live up to the expectations of the times and and grow to be a youth with ambition, morality, ability and responsibility in the new era. In this way, you can make contributions to the great rejuvenation ofthe Chinese nation.”
